It’s not a job but a passion
How did you spend your weekend? Well I got to spend mine at a hotel! Best weekend ever. Don’t get the wrong idea though. I wasn’t relaxing by the pool or waking up to the buffet. I was actually taking an internship at the Hotel B (short for: Hotel Boutique). It’s a dream come true for me.
I have forgotten many things in my life but I have never forgotten a hotel, I’ve stayed at. I don’t know how my passion for hospitality started. It might have had something to do with watching “The Suite life of Zach and Cody”. Who knows? What I can tell you is that when you find a job that you love, you will never work an hour in your life.
What did I do there? Study. Study hard. That’s because when one works at a hotel, they have to know everything about it: breakfast time, costs, how many rooms there are, history, art, what it offers, basically everything the hotel holds. While studying I worked as a bellboy: opening doors, talking about the hotel, answering questions, walking guest to their rooms, GETTING TIPS, making sure the hotel was neat, setting up rooms. When you’re a bellboy, you don’t spend time sitting down. Being a bellboy at Hotel B is unique. Here at hotel B the bellboy make a relationship with the guest, talks with them, guides them through their stay at the hotel. There is a personalized service. The bellboy is at your service. At any other hotel the bellboy grabs your bag takes them to you room wait for the tip and leaves the next time you’ll se him is at checkout
The first days are always the hardest. I wasn’t used to the many hour of work. When I was told to go on Friday from 11am to 4pm. I felt great that’s 3 hours less than school. I was so excited I woke up at 7am to get everything ready. I started to work and time flew by. It went by so fast that I ended up staying until 7pm. In my first 8-hour shift I spent all of it standing and working except for my 45 min lunch break. I finally learned the joy of sitting down. On my way home I was thinking of what I was going to do with my friends. When I got home I went straight for the bed and as soon as my head hit that pillow I was out cold. There was no waking me up. I slept like a baby.
Saturday on the other hand was a whole different story. Arriving at 11am, I told myself “alright its Saturday I need to leave at 4pm to rest”. Instead I found out there was a “weeding” at the hotel. A bride was coming to the hotel to get ready and take pictures, then she was leaving to find her fiancée at the alter. So I already knew I was going to be needed and ended up staying at the hotel until 10pm. Thought this day I was used to the long hours and was busy at every second of the day I realized, this is what I love. The best part was that my coworkers treated me as if they knew me forever they trusted me and I trusted them. It’s a small family here at Hotel B, they’ve helped me love hospitality. They’ve guided me and I still have a long way to go. Everything I told you I’ve done has point and I realized why. Especially knowing the hotels history because many people ask since it’s a relatively new hotel.
It’s Sunday and I can tell myself right now that I’m a different person. Being a bellboy has changed me it has helped me build character. Today I’ve done and treated the way I see many things differently. By that I mean in a better way. I can happily say I will be on my way back to the hotel in an hour.
