"Damn, girl you thick .I bet that feel good." These were the exact words from a man's so called catcall to Melanie Ennis. This prompted Ennis to start up the hash tag #youoksis to get all of New York to know that this is happening constantly. The point of #youoksis is to get women to know that they are not alone in this fight. She also wants people to interfere when they hear catcalls. Below there is a video that was made to show how you could stop catcalling. This problem is not centered around New York though. It is a global problem, even here in Peru.
For example yesterday my friends and I went out to eat at an open restaurant. We were minding our own business, when I hear a guy pass by that verbally harassed a woman with foul language. I look and the girl has this face of embarrassment, of hate. I was in shock. Words could not come out of my mouth. Why do women have to handle this, I asked myself.
Who has the right to make a girl uncomfortable? No one! Women say that they feel its part of the culture and that they remember listing to songs singing about cat calling. How does society make it look all right to make woman feel that this is part of society? Society is slowly changing for the worse. It is our job to change it back and even make it better
In the United States 65% of woman said they experience harassment in some form. 41% have reported experiencing physical aggressive forms.
In Peru 7 out of 10 women suffer physical abuse from their husband and 2 of them suffer verbal abuse. This does not count the street harassment though.
I think that each one of us should take action in this world, whether your a woman you should stand up for yourself or a man and acknowledge that cat calling isn't something that should be embedded in our society. We can all interfere when we hear verbal harassment and make our society better. Spread the word about street harassment and learn how to help when seeing someone being harassed by using the hash tag #youoksis.
